CS-12J Announcements

12/18: The final is graded and you can view your results in WebCT. I ended up giving full credit for some of the questions, whether you had the correct answer or not, because so many people missed them.

To view your final results:

  1. Go to the final exam and push the View Scores button.
  2. Under the column Attempts Number select the "1" hyperlink.

This will show you all the questions and answers for your test.

12/11: As a reminder, here is the link to the Practice Final Exam. In addition, you should be prepared to write code to read and write files, process data in arrays and create and handle buttons and layout managers in a graphical user interface.

12/10: I gave a one-day extension for the Sampler Project with a 10% penalty. See WebCT for the exact cutoff time.

12/2: I updated the specifications for the Sampler Project to include some project ideas and updated grading criteria. I also changed the functional specifications.

11/24: The Spring 2004 Schedule of Classes is now available online. Printed schedules are due soon.

11/19: I released the specifications for A9: File Lister.

11/13: The midterm is graded and you can see your score in WebCT. The scores link will show you summary statistics for the test. Since so many people missed the midterm question on method stubs, I threw it out by giving everyone full credit for the question. In addition, I added 3 points (4%) to everyone's score up to the maximum of 75 total points.

11/11: Based on feedback from some students, I updated the specifications for A8: Number Converter.

11/10: I posted the solution to A7: Calculate Your Grade in WebCT.

10/29: A number of students had trouble finishing A6: Student Records. Therefore, I have decided to let everone have a few more days to work on it. The new due date and time is Friday with the exact time posted in WebCT.

10/28: I posted the solution to A5: A Class Date in WebCT.

10/17: I have completed rescheduling course topics due to my illness. The date for midterm 2 is unchanged.

10/17: Since we did not have class on Wednesday, I have reset the A5: A Class Date due date in WebCT to Wednesday 10/22.

10/14: Since we did not have class on Monday, I have reset the A5: A Class Date due date in WebCT to Monday 10/20. I will update the schedule in a few days.

10/13: The instructor is ill today and class is cancelled for Monday, 10/13. We will resume on Wednesday.

10/6: Since so many people missed the following question on the midterm, I threw it out by giving everyone full creadit.

If the variables named price and rate are doubles and qty is an int, what is a possible declaration for the getTax method that’s called by the statement that follows?

For similar reasons, I gave half-credit to those who got the following wrong:

For the following code, if the user enters -1 into the first dialog box, what does the code do?

10/5: This is a reminder that you must complete your 3 attempts at the take-home portion of the midterm by Monday morning at 9:30 AM. Also, I have completed all the grading to date and posted all the example solutions in WebCT.

10/3: I updated the instructions on How To Document and Organize Java Code. I consolidated some basic style information and clarified some requirements. Hopefully, this will make it easier to deal with programming style issues.

10/3: I added new instructions for installing and configuring TextPad, including how to install and use CheckStyle with TextPad. I also updated the jEdit instructions to explain how to run CheckStyle.

9/25: I decided that I should not have taken off a point in A2: Totally Erroneous for minor programming style issues. I have added back the point to all the scores of those students who were affected.

9/24: Since we did not complete section 4.5 today, we will complete it on Monday. Also, exercise 4.5 is optional and worth extra credit.

9/21: A number of people had problems on A2: Totally Erroneous. If you want to improve the score you received for A2: Totally Erroneous, you may resubmit it for regrading by 9/27. If you are satisfied with your score for assignment 2, then you do not need to resubmit.

9/16: The fix for the WebCT file upload problem is applied and seems to work well. I have tested it with Mozilla on both Linux and Windows. It should work on Mac computers as well, though I have not personally tested it. Please feel free to upload your assignments using your favorite browser and computer system. Let me know if you have any problems.

9/15: A potential fix to the WebCT file upload problem is going to be applied on 9/16 at noon. The server will be down for a short period of time.

9/10: Two students have reported file upload problems in WebCT using a Mac running OS X and using IE 5.1. If anyone is sucessful uploading from the Mac, please let me know what you used.

9/10: If you have problems with uploading to WebCT, then let me know so I can reset your file upload. Please see In Case of Difficulty for instructions.

9/9: Please be aware that WebCT does not upload files properly with recent versions of Mozilla. The list of compatible browsers is available at here and we are using WebCT version CE 4.1. Please do not use Mozilla when uploading files for assignments and exercises.

9/9: If you have trouble using WebCT, please bring yur exercises and assignment to class so I can help you load it into WebCT.
